When a dentist gives you a filling they start by removing the decayed tooth material, cleaning the affected area, and then filling the cleaned-out cavity with a filling material.
By closing off spaces where bacteria can enter, a filling also helps prevent further decay.
There are a number of different materials that can be used to fill a hole in your tooth. Porcelain fillings only require a couple of visits as the tooth is treated with a lab-made filling that has to be crafted to your needs in a dental laboratory before fitting. Chairside fillings can be Tooth coloured or amalgamed. Tooth-coloured options prove to be the most popular of these options as they remain the quickest and most natural-looking of the options – no one can tell that you’ve had a filling.
Porcelain fillings: Porcelain fillings are referred to as onlays or inlays, and are custom-made and then fitted to your teeth. They boast a similar durability to that of Gold fillings but look more natural.
Silver (amalgam) fillings: Silver fillings are also durable, but due to their noticeable colour, they are mostly used for treating the back teeth.
Composite resin fillings: Composite resin is a kind of plastic that will match your natural tooth colour, making a filling less visible. The resin mixture can be poured straight into the cavity, making it a relatively quick treatment, if a little less durable than Gold or Silver.
Should you require a filling, your dentist will discuss with you the different options available and best advise on the most suitable for you and your teeth.

“Really lovely friendly practice. Always so friendly, and always remember exactly who you are, bringing a really personal touch to any appointment. Knowing you are in good hands at a dentist is always key,...”
Joined Hamstreet Dental Clinic after having some bad experience with other dentists and heard lovely things about them, people were right, they are all lovely, welcoming, friendly and really put you at ease, I am never nervous when seeing them. Thank you for everything.
The receptionist Georgia and also Jay were the first contacts upon entering the Clinic and they were both very helpful. I had an appointment with Shilpa the Dentist and she explained to me the treatment that I needed and it was easy to understand, albeit even though I had some worries with a previous dentist. Now I have no concerns about my next visit.Signed: Ann Morford
Today I had my first visit to this clinic. I am in my 70's and must say of all dentist practices I have experienced Hamstreet clinic is by far the best in all aspects of dentistry. From Georgia the receptionist and assistant, Jay the manager and Shilpa the dentist I can't thank them enough for their help and reassurance.
I used Shilpa for Invisalign. The whole process from start to finish was smooth and easy. Shilpa was so communicative and answered all of my questions - no matter how silly! Even for the aftercare, Shilpa arranged for extra retainers to be ordered (as I manage to loose everything!). There may be a lot of cheaper options available out there but I am very happy I used Shilpa and the team as the support and service I recieved was second to none. I have already recommended Hamstreet Dental Clinic to others and will continue to do so! :D
The best experience!! Such a lovely welcoming team. I was looking around for a while ( a year )for someone I trusted and felt in good hands. I have had very bad dental experience with my teeth. I’m a nervous patient but as soon as I had a consultation with shilpa I instantly felt I was in safe hands she was so thorough with explaining the journey with my teeth and so friendly which put me at ease. When I had my treatment done Terry (detal assistant) was just amazing, so calm very very caring. Changed my opinion completely. Couldn’t thank you all enough!
Best dentist I've ever been too , Im a very nervous patient and I have a habit of going once and not returning , Dr Shilpa and tari allways put me at ease and are very patient with me. There is allways a walm welcome from Georgia when I arrive and they all are very polite and courteous. I wouldn't do anywhere elce
I highly recommend this very caring and professional dental practice. I had not seen a dentist for several years, following my previous dentists retirement & then lockdown. So I needed a fair amount of catching up on treatments. This included fillings replacement and some root canal work. One very badly worn back tooth in particular was saved rather than having to be extracted, so I am very happy indeed. The dental team are highly skilled, gentle and attentive. Shilpa spent time carefully explaining the treatment plan and always gave options with costs and outcomes, helping me choose what was best for my circumstances. My concerns were always carefully listened to and any queries fully answered and addressed. Everyone has been very kind and caring, the treatment was gentle and the whole team, Dentists, Nurse and receptionists have been exeptional in their care throughout. Thank you to everyone for restoring my (now pain free! Hooray!) healthy, happy smile!
A fantastic level of service. Personal, caring and attentive. I recently had an emergency situation which was dealt with incredibly well. Highly recommended.
Have been with Hamstreet Dental Clinic for many years and cannot fault the team. Last year had to have teeth taken out and dentures fitted. This was my decision and Shilpa could not have been kinder, helpful and caring. This is something I have not regretted doing and find that my general health is better and that eating is now not a painful process. I now find that I can enjoy a wider variety of food.
